History

The Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien "flying swallow" was a Japanese World War II fighter aircraft used by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force. The first encounter reports claimed Ki-61s were Messerschmitt Bf 109s: further reports claimed that the new aircraft was an Italian design, which led to the Allied reporting name of "Tony", assigned by the United States War Department. The Japanese Army designation was "Army Type 3 Fighter" . It was the only mass-produced Japanese fighter of the war to use a liquid-cooled inline V engine. Over 3,000 Ki-61s were produced. Initial prototypes saw action over Yokohama during the Halsey-Doolittle Raid on 18. April 1942, and continued to fly combat missions throughout the war.

I like this FMS Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien airplane very much. It is impossible to go 100 miles per hour in level flight. The battery is a 4-cell LiPo, which will produce 16.8 Volts full charge, with no resistive or other electrical losses. The motor is a 3648-kV770, which produces 770 rpm for each Volt applied. With 16.8 Volts applied, and with no load applied, the motor will spin at 12,936 revolutions per minute. The propeller is a 10.5x7, which means, that in a totally incompressible medium, it will advance seven inches in one revolution. With the propeller spinning @ 12,936 rpm, it is impossible to go faster than 85.75 mph. Perhaps the airplane will go 100 km/hr (62.5 mph). Fortunately, this is a 1/12 scale model, and the full-size airplane could only go 360 miles per hour in level flight with the original Kawasaki HA-40 engine. If it is possible to fly this model airplane @ 30 mph in level flight, then it will be at its maximum scale speed.
